‘Gateway to Freedom’ Underground Railroad Statue. The Detroit / Ontario Underground Railroad Memorial. The sculptor behind this memorial is Ed Dwight. Ed used Granite and Bronze as his material for this great monument commemorating the escape of fugitive slaves to the freedom of Canada. There are two parts to this monument this here in Hart Plaza Riverfront Detroit, MI United States of America and another in City Hall Esplanade Windsor, Ontario Canada. The monument was finished October 20, 2001.
